Brief

Stanislaw Lem was born on September 12, 1921 in Lviv, died on March 27, 2006 in Cracow, Poland. 2021 is the 100th birthday (and 15th death) anniversary of the greatest Polish science fiction writer. The year 2021 is also a special time for us due to the ongoing struggle against the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic and the rapidly advancing civilization changes Stanisław Lem was a man of above-average intelligence and an exceptional visionary. In his books written back in the twentieth century, Lem predicted the emergence of many devices that function today, such as audiobooks and e-books. He also wrote extensively on various forms of intelligence, including machines as in the novel The Invincible (1964), and the intelligent ocean in the novel Solaris (1961). Lem also addressed the issues of cultural changes generated by the development of technology, e.g. in the novel Return from the Stars (1961).

The LemLand 2021 competition aims primarily to popularize the person of Stanisław Lem himself and his work. Thus, the subject matter of the posters may refer directly to the Author – posters in the form of a tribute to his work – Hommage à Stanisław Lem, his literature and its adaptations – films, performances etc. and to the contexts of our future. Questions about the nature and pace of changes in our reality as a result of technology, as well as questions about the culture-creating role of technology are also the desired topics of competition entries.

Technical requirements

Each work should be sent in two formats: one for printing, the other for display on screens.
Print format requirements: JPG or PDF, CMYK, 100×70 cm, 200 DPI, max 10 Mb file size, vertical orientation, file name: Country_Name_Surname_Poster-Title_print

Screen display format requirements: JPG or PNG, RGB, max 3000 pixels on longer side, max 10Mb file size, vertical orientation, file name: Country_Name_Surname_Poster-Title_screen

Submission deadline

1st of July 2021

Works in digital version should be sent via the Entry Form.

Please do attach filled entry form as well. Maximum numbers of Works per participant is 3.

Works, which do not meet technical requirements will not take part in the Competition.

Exhibitions

The first, pre-premiere exhibition will take place in September on the Silesian Festival of Science. The exact day is not estimated yet because of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Organizers will publish the date of this exhibition as soon as possible. The works presented during The Silesian Festival of Science will be displayed digitally across the area of International Congress Centre in Katowice, Poland. Estimated number of displayed posters: 100.

The second exhibition of printed works will take place in Dydo Poster Gallery in Cracow in September 2021. Estimated number of displayed posters: 50.

Participants

The competition is open to artists and designers from all over the world. The competition is also open to design or fine arts students. Participation in the competition is free of charge.

Diplomas

Organizers will grant diplomas for first, second and third place in the Competition. Organizers will grant 3 Honorary mentions. Each artist whose work will be qualified to the exhibition will get a digital certificate of participation (pdf format).
